WorkCover to Visit Gladstone Businesses

WorkCover Queensland is visiting Gladstone employers in the construction, manufacturing and technical service industries during May 2015 to help raise awareness about the importance of correctly covering workers for workplace injury.

These site visits are part of WorkCover's ongoing state-wide education program to raise employer awareness of workers' compensation and return to work obligations.

Since mid-2014, WorkCover has visited over 1800 employers in regions such as Townsville, Rockhampton, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Mackay, Bundaberg and Brisbane.

WorkCover Education and Compliance Manager Erin Leftwich said feedback from employers suggests they are getting great value from these site visits because they help clarify interpretations of workers' compensation legislation.

"Employers are telling us these compliance discussions are very beneficial and they have welcomed WorkCover's advice and assistance," Erin said.

"Some employers are still unaware of their duty to cover their workers for workplace accidents, while others are at risk of being underinsured and need clarity on the difference between a contractor and a worker.

"Having the correct policy means businesses can protect themselves against risk if one of their workers sustains an injury in the workplace.

"A workplace injury claim can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars depending on the severity of the injury," Erin said.

"Although injury claims in the construction, manufacturing and technical service industries are on the decline across Queensland, the average time it takes an injured worker to return to work is increasing. This means higher claim costs, something businesses need to insure themselves for."

WorkCover supports and works with employers and workers in what can be a difficult and emotional journey recovering from a work-related injury. Support and benefits may include:

weekly compensation (for lost wages)
medical, surgical and hospital expenses and medicines
rehabilitation treatment and equipment or services
travelling expenses.
The 150,000 businesses who are part of WorkCover Queensland's scheme benefit from the lowest average premium rate in Australia ($1.20) and one of the nation's fastest return work rates with over 90 per cent of injured workers returning to work within 12 months.

You can apply for a policy at any time using our online services, or read more about renewing your policy and declaring wages on our dedicated premium page including information on what wages should be declared.

Prompt Service

Hi Kelly and Alison,

Thank you so much for working on the WHS Manual last night for Peter Small Plumbing.

I can't tell you how much I appreciated your prompt service - I am sure this is above and beyond your service standard.

Please pass on to your management how thrilled I am with the service I received.

Sometimes you get a bit skeptical when you just google a product with no prior knowledge of a company - but I was desperate and I thought 'Oh well if I get ripped off - I'll just wear it' But from the very first email I received from Alison I could tell this was a professional business.

Thank you so much for helping me with this 'complex' issue of WHS. Thank you also for the helpful notes on 'Implementing a Safety System' (Very helpful for the novice !!
