Do I need to edit the SWMS before providing it to the Principal Contractor?

Yes, you will need to first complete the necessary fields in the SWMS template, such as business name, address, ABN, etc. The SWMS should also be customised to the specific tasks and site.

Can I include my logo and company name in the documents?

Yes, all documents are provided in Microsoft Word Format, making it easy for you to add your company logo and details.

What should my SWMS number be?

A SWMS number is just your internal reference for filing and record-keeping. You can number them according to project numbers or use a company-specific numbering system (i.e. Acme Services = SWMS No: AS001).

What does "Date” and “Review Date" in the document mean?

The “Date” is the date that the SWMS was prepared, and the “Review Date” is when your business is scheduled to review your WHS/OHS documents. It's important to review these documents at least annually, in consultation with workers and other relevant parties, especially in case of workplace changes, legislative changes, serious incidents, or ineffective control measures.

What information should a SWMS contain?

A SWMS must identify and specify high-risk construction work, its associated hazards, risks, control measures, and how these will be implemented, monitored, and reviewed. It should include details like PCBU’s information, person responsible for SWMS, principal contractor, work location, and dates. Clarity and accessibility are vital for all site supervisors and workers.

Who Are These SWMS For?

Small to Medium Australian Businesses: Our SWMSs templates are suitable for a wide range of industries and business types. They are utilised by business owners, principal contractors, site supervisors, managers, contractors, sub-contractors, and HSRs.
Compliance with Legal and Safety Regulations: SWMS are often a legal requirement for conducting high-risk construction work under workplace health and safety laws, but are also frequently used outside of construction to help businesses outline the hazards and specify appropriate control measures.
Applying for Tenders: Businesses in the process of tender applications often are required to provide adequate WHS documentation, and our templates can save hours compared to creating these from scratch.

The key sections in our Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) templates are:

Company and Project Details: Includes the company name, ABN, contact information, project details, and SWMS number.
Work Activity Description: Brief description of the work activity, including the location, work area, and review date.
Personnel Responsibilities: Lists personnel responsible for monitoring the activity, including management, supervisors, operators, and workers.
Legislation and Standards: Refers to the legislation, codes of practice, and standards that must be complied with.
Plant and Equipment Requirements: Details about any plant and equipment required for the activity and maintenance checks.
Materials and SDS Requirements: Information on materials used and whether a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is required.
Personnel Qualifications and Training: Specifies qualifications and training required for personnel involved in the activity, including general and project-specific induction and work activity training.
Consultation on SWMS Development: Information on personnel consulted during the development of the SWMS, including names, positions, and industry experience.
High-Risk Work Identification: Lists various high-risk work scenarios applicable to the activity.
Hierarchy of Controls: Describes the preferred order of control measures to minimise risks, ranging from elimination to personal protective equipment.
Risk Assessment: Includes steps to determine the consequence (impact), probability (likelihood) of events occurring, and assess the overall risk level, using a Risk Assessment Matrix.
Control Measures: Detailed breakdown of the job into steps, identifying potential safety and environmental hazards, risk ratings, control measures, and the person responsible for ensuring management methods are applied.
Personal Protection Equipment (PPE): Specifies the PPE requirements for the work activity.
Accidents or Incidents Handling: Procedures for responding to accidents or incidents, including first aid and emergency response.
Site Specific Hazards and Controls Signoff: A section for workers to sign off, confirming that the SWMS has been explained, understood, and accepted, along with a confirmation of their qualifications.

Our SWMS templates provide a comprehensive approach to managing health and safety risks, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, and promoting a safe working environment.

A SWMS, as per the WHS Act, is a written statement required for High-Risk Construction Work. However SWMSs are often used for work outside of construction because of their ability to be a generic one-size-fits-all document. The purpose of a SWMS is to inform everyone involved in specific work about the risks and necessary risk control measures. Persons Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) must prepare SWMS before commencing any high-risk construction work, and it’s advisable to have the SWMS readily available at the site. SWMS may also be known as Safe Work Method Statements, Work Method Statements (WMS), and Safe Work Methods (SWM).

Our SWMS templates are pre-formatted and ready for use (i.e. not blank). After downloading, simply add your company name, logo, ABN, site-specific details, and additional risks not already addressed in the SWMS. Then print and integrate it into your WHS/OHS System. It’s important to remember you should be continuously refining the contents of the SWMS, especially before starting new activities, and in consultation with your workers and others in the business.
