This Welding & Cutting Risk Assessment/JSA (Job Safety Analysis) is pre-filled and covers welding, thermal and oxygen cutting, and heating work. It breaks the job into 9 activities, from planning the work to the fire watch, completion and incident response, with the hazards, control measures and risk ratings before and after controls for each. It's written by WHS specialists, aligned to Australian WHS legislation, and fully editable in Microsoft Word.
Who it's for
Metal fabricators and engineering workshops
Boilermakers and welders working on site
Structural steel fabricators and erectors
Maintenance and repair crews in manufacturing and processing
Farm, fleet and mechanical workshops
It also works as a written task risk assessment for any business where workers weld or cut metal, the same way you'd use a JSA or Safe Work Procedure.
A risk assessment, also called a JSA, JSEA or task risk assessment, records the hazards of a task and how you control them. If the task is part of high risk construction work, the law requires a SWMS for that work, so use our Welding & Cutting SWMS instead.
Use it to
Show clients, insurers and auditors how you manage the risks
Apply for tenders, contracts and supplier panels
Get through prequalification with Avetta, Cm3 and other contractor portals
Induct new workers and train them in the task
What this risk assessment covers
Site hazard briefing and checking workers are licensed and trained
Planning the work and pre-start checks for heat, gas and chemical exposure
Hot work in flammable atmospheres, burns and welding glare
Isolating power and managing electrical hazards from welders, tools and leads
Gas cylinders, pressurised containers and vessels
Explosion risk when cutting containers that held flammable substances
Manual handling, fatigue, noise, slips, trips and falls during welding
Cut material dropping onto workers below or onto feet and hands
Clearing combustibles and keeping a fire watch for smouldering fires
Shutting down gas, fumes and hot equipment at completion
Welding fume as a carcinogen, plus metal fume fever from galvanised and stainless material
Incident and injury response
What's included
Hazards and control measures for 9 work activities

Common questions
Do I need a SWMS or a risk assessment for welding and cutting?
A SWMS is legally required when the job is high risk construction work, for example hot work where someone could fall more than 2 metres, in an area that may have a flammable atmosphere, or on or near fuel or chemical lines. Outside those situations a SWMS isn't mandatory, but you still have to manage the risks, and a risk assessment or JSA is a practical way to record how. Clients, head contractors and prequalification portals often ask for one either way. If the job is high risk construction work, use our Welding & Cutting SWMS instead.
Does it cover cutting drums and containers?
Yes. It covers explosion of a container that held a flammable or combustible substance, sealed or pressurised vessels bursting from expanding gas, and toxic fume from residues or internal linings and coatings.
Can I change it?
Yes. It's a Microsoft Word file, so you can add, remove or change any hazard, control or rating, and add your own logo and details.
Does it suit my state?
Yes. It's written to the model WHS laws and suits all states and territories, including Victoria under the OHS Act and Regulations.
What if it doesn't suit my work?
You're covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee if it isn't fit for purpose.
