This Automotive Air Conditioning Service Risk Assessment/JSA (Job Safety Analysis) is pre-filled and covers recovering, testing, repairing and recharging vehicle air conditioning systems in the workshop or on the road. It sets out the hazards, control measures and risk ratings before and after controls for 32 activities, from the daily pre-start briefing to pack-down and emergency response. It's written by WHS specialists, aligned to Australian WHS legislation, and fully editable in Microsoft Word.
Who it's for
Automotive air conditioning specialists
Mechanical workshops and service centres
Auto electricians who service air conditioning
Fleet, truck and plant maintenance workshops
Mobile mechanics who service vehicles on site
A risk assessment, also called a JSA, JSEA or task risk assessment, records the hazards of a task and how you control them. If the task is part of high risk construction work, the law requires a SWMS for that work, so use our Automotive Air Conditioning Service SWMS instead.
Use it to
Show clients, insurers and auditors how you manage the risks
Apply for tenders, contracts and supplier panels
Get through prequalification with Avetta, Cm3 and other contractor portals
Induct new workers and train them in the task
What this risk assessment covers
Refrigerant licensing, trading authorisation and matching equipment to the refrigerant fitted
Workshop ventilation, ignition source control and refrigerant cylinder storage and handling
Hoist positioning and working safely beneath a raised vehicle
Battery isolation, de-powering hybrid and electric vehicles, and deactivating SRS airbags before dash work
Identifying the refrigerant, then recovery with controls for cold burns, oxygen displacement and cylinder overfill
Opening the system, replacing components, and evaporator and heater box replacement
Nitrogen pressure testing, UV dye and electronic leak detection, evacuation and charging
Flammable A2L and hydrocarbon refrigerants, and toxic gases from refrigerant contacting a flame or hot surface
PAG and POE lubricants, coil cleaners, and mould and dust from cabin filters and evaporators
Carbon monoxide from running engines, hot workshops and mobile servicing away from the workshop
Waste refrigerant, oil and component disposal, and housekeeping

Common questions
Do I need a SWMS or a risk assessment for automotive air conditioning work?
No. Servicing vehicle air conditioning in a workshop isn't high risk construction work, so a SWMS isn't a legal requirement. You still have to manage the risks, including refrigerant exposure and working under raised vehicles, and a risk assessment or JSA is a practical way to record how. Clients, insurers and prequalification portals often ask for one.
Does it cover R1234yf and R744 refrigerants?
Yes. It covers identifying the refrigerant before recovery, the flammable A2L hazards of R1234yf, and the training workers need for R1234yf and R744 work. It also covers R134a and the refrigerant handling licence needed for scheduled refrigerants.
Can I change it?
Yes. It's a Microsoft Word file, so you can add, remove or change any hazard, control or rating, and add your own logo and details.
Does it suit my state?
Yes. It's written to the model WHS laws and suits all states and territories, including Victoria under the OHS Act and Regulations.
What if it doesn't suit my work?
You're covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee if it isn't fit for purpose.
