This Chemical Decanting, Labelling and Storage SOP (Safe Operating Procedure) sets out how your team transfers hazardous chemicals from bulk or supplier containers into smaller containers, labels them correctly and stores them safely. It covers SDS and container checks, controlled decanting, when a workplace label is needed, segregating incompatible chemicals, cleaning up and keeping the Hazardous Chemical Register current. It's written by WHS specialists, aligned to Australian WHS legislation, and fully editable in Microsoft Word.

Common questions
Does every decanted container need a label?
No. A label isn't needed if the chemical will be used immediately, only by you, and you stay with it, provided the container is cleaned straight after use. In every other case the SOP requires a workplace label showing the product identifier and hazard pictogram or statement, in English.
Does it cover transporting chemicals?
No. It doesn't cover transporting dangerous goods by road. High risk construction work also needs a SWMS in addition to this SOP.
Can we reuse food or drink containers for decanting?
No. The SOP prohibits decanting into any container previously used for food, drink or an incompatible chemical.
Can I change it?
Yes. It's a Microsoft Word file, so you can add, remove or change any step, check or hazard, and add your own logo and details.
Does it suit my state?
Yes. It's written to the model WHS laws and suits all states and territories, including Victoria under the OHS Act and Regulations.
What if it doesn't suit my work?
You're covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee if it isn't fit for purpose.
