This Container Loading, Unloading & Restraint SOP (Safe Operating Procedure) covers loading and unloading goods in shipping containers and restraining the load. It covers immobilising the vehicle, checking fumigation clearance, opening doors when stock may have shifted, safe access, mechanical aids, load distribution, and lashing, dunnage, blocking and bracing in line with the NTC Load Restraint Guide. It's written by WHS specialists, aligned to Australian WHS legislation, and fully editable in Microsoft Word.

Common questions
Is a shipping container a confined space?
Not simply because it's enclosed. It becomes one where there's a risk to the atmosphere inside, such as fumigation residue or off-gassing cargo. In that case workers don't enter under this SOP and your confined spaces procedure applies.
Does it cover operating the forklift or reach stacker?
No. Moving the container itself with a forklift, reach stacker or crane is covered by plant-specific SOPs.
Can I change it?
Yes. It's a Microsoft Word file, so you can add, remove or change any step, check or hazard, and add your own logo and details.
Does it suit my state?
Yes. It's written to the model WHS laws and suits all states and territories, including Victoria under the OHS Act and Regulations.
What if it doesn't suit my work?
You're covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee if it isn't fit for purpose.
