This Solar Panel Roof Installation SOP (Safe Operating Procedure) sets out how to install solar PV panels and mounting or racking systems safely on residential and commercial roofs. It covers confirming fall protection is in place, lifting materials to roof level, fixing rails and brackets to structural members, two-person panel handling in wind, clamping panels as you go and routing and clipping DC cabling to the isolator point. It's written by WHS specialists, aligned to Australian WHS legislation, and fully editable in Microsoft Word.

Common questions
Does it cover installing edge protection or safety mesh?
No. Edge protection, guardrails and safety mesh must already be installed and inspected under your roof access and fall protection procedures before this work starts.
Does it cover DC isolation and commissioning?
No. DC isolation, live testing and system commissioning are covered by the Solar DC Isolation & Commissioning SOP.
Do I need a SWMS as well?
Yes. Solar panel installation where a fall of more than 2 metres is possible is high risk construction work, so you need a SWMS in addition to this SOP.
Can I change it?
Yes. It's a Microsoft Word file, so you can add, remove or change any step, check or hazard, and add your own logo and details.
Does it suit my state?
Yes. It's written to the model WHS laws and suits all states and territories, including Victoria under the OHS Act and Regulations.
What if it doesn't suit my work?
You're covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee if it isn't fit for purpose.
