This Nitrogen Pressure Testing SOP (Safe Operating Procedure) gives technicians a clear method for leak testing refrigeration and air conditioning pipework with oxygen-free dry nitrogen. It covers checking and securing the cylinder, regulator and hoses, raising pressure gradually to the rated test pressure, hold periods and leak detection, controlled pressure release before repairs, and what to do if a fitting fails or nitrogen is released in a plant room. It's written by WHS specialists, aligned to Australian WHS legislation, and fully editable in Microsoft Word.

Who it's for

  • Refrigeration and air conditioning technicians

  • HVAC installation contractors

  • Commercial refrigeration service businesses

  • Building services and maintenance contractors

  • Mechanical services plumbers

Use it to

  • Train and induct workers in exactly how you expect the task to be done

  • Keep a clear reference at the machine, in the vehicle or on site

  • Record competency with the built-in sign-off

  • Show clients, insurers and auditors your safe work methods are written down

What this SOP covers

  • Uncontrolled release of high-pressure nitrogen from hose, fitting or component failure

  • Overpressurising pipework beyond its rated test pressure

  • Cylinders falling or valves and regulators being damaged

  • Fire or explosion if oxygen, compressed air or other gases are used

  • Manual handling injuries moving nitrogen cylinders

  • Asphyxiation from nitrogen release in confined or poorly ventilated spaces

  • Eye and skin injuries from leak detection fluid or failed fittings

  • Whipping hoses or fittings releasing under pressure

What's included

  • 7 pre-operational checks, from training and licence to the cylinder, regulator, hoses, rated test pressure and ventilation

  • A 10-step operating procedure covering connection, gradual pressurisation, hold periods, leak detection, recording leaks and controlled pressure release

  • Isolation and energy control for securing the cylinder, using a rated regulator with pressure relief and staying within test pressure

  • 6 shutdown, housekeeping and post-operation steps

  • Emergency actions for hose or fitting failure and large nitrogen releases in confined or poorly ventilated spaces

  • PPE checklist and a list of related documents

  • Competency acknowledgement and worker sign-off

  • Space for your logo, SOP number, version and review dates

Why use this template

  • Saves hours compared with writing an SOP from a blank page

  • Written as clear, numbered steps that workers can follow on the job

  • Fully editable, so you can match it to your equipment, site and how your team works

  • The competency sign-off gives you a training record from day one

How it works

  1. Buy online and download straight away. You'll also get an email with your link.

  2. Add your logo, company name, SOP number and dates.

  3. Check it suits your equipment and site, and edit anything you need to.

  4. Train your workers and have them sign the competency acknowledgement.

Need more than one SOP?

This SOP is also included in the Ultimate Air Conditioning & Refrigeration SOP Bundle. At $197 for the whole bundle, it works out much cheaper than buying SOPs one at a time.

Common questions

Does it cover refrigerant recovery or charging?

No. It covers nitrogen pressure testing only. Refrigerant recovery, evacuation and charging, and brazing or soldering, need their own procedures.

Can I use compressed air instead of nitrogen?

No. The SOP requires oxygen-free dry nitrogen, or an approved nitrogen and tracer gas mix, because oxygen or compressed air can cause a fire or explosion with residual refrigerant or oil.

Does it address working in plant rooms?

Yes. It requires the area to be adequately ventilated and covers evacuating immediately if a large release of nitrogen occurs in a confined or poorly ventilated space.

Can I change it?

Yes. It's a Microsoft Word file, so you can add, remove or change any step, check or hazard, and add your own logo and details.

Does it suit my state?

Yes. It's written to the model WHS laws and suits all states and territories, including Victoria under the OHS Act and Regulations.

What if it doesn't suit my work?

You're covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee if it isn't fit for purpose.
