This Traffic Management Sign Setup SWMS (Safe Work Method Statement) is pre-filled and covers setting out temporary traffic management signs at a road worksite. It covers 5 activities, from the daily pre-start meeting and approaching the worksite to placing signs, with the hazards, control measures and risk ratings before and after controls for each. It's written by WHS specialists, aligned to Australian WHS legislation, and fully editable in Microsoft Word.

Who it's for

  • Traffic management and traffic control companies

  • Civil and road construction contractors

What this SWMS covers

  • Daily pre-start meeting so the crew knows about new hazards

  • Approaching the worksite and avoiding rear end crashes when slowing

  • Drive-through inspection for powerlines, open waterways and steep verges

  • Culverts, table drains and dust from high winds reducing visibility

  • Vehicle and pedestrian traffic entering the worksite zone

  • Placing signs to an approved scheme, without removed or contradictory signage

  • Being struck by passing traffic or the works vehicle reversing

  • Manual handling, sharp sign edges and sun exposure

  • Emergency response to injuries and equipment damage

  • Risk ratings before and after controls, with a 5x5 risk matrix and the hierarchy of controls

Why use this template

  • Saves hours compared with writing a SWMS from a blank page

  • Covers the most common hazards and control measures for this work, ready to use out of the box

  • Helps your business stay compliant, with risk ratings, worker sign-off and consultation records already set up

How it works

  1. Buy online and download straight away. You'll also get an email with your link.

  3. Check it suits your site and task, edit anything you need to, and consult your workers before you finalise it.

  4. Brief your team and collect signatures.

Common questions

Do I need a SWMS for setting up traffic management signs?

A SWMS is legally required when the work is high risk construction work, and placing signs on or next to a road in use for roadworks fits that category. Where signs are set up for something that isn't construction work, such as an event, a SWMS isn't mandatory, but you still have to manage the risks. Road authorities, principal contractors and prequalification portals often ask for one either way.

Does it include the traffic control competencies?

Yes. It lists the competencies the road authority requires, such as RIIWHS302 Implement traffic management plan and RIIWHS205 Control traffic with stop-slow bat or their current equivalents, plus any traffic controller card the road authority issues.

Can I change it?

Yes. It's a Microsoft Word file, so you can add, remove or change any hazard, control or rating, and add your own logo and details.

Does it suit my state?

Yes. It's written to the model WHS laws and suits all states and territories, including Victoria under the OHS Act and Regulations.

What if it doesn't suit my work?

You're covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee if it isn't fit for purpose.
