This Silo & Grain Auger Operation SOP (Safe Operating Procedure) sets out how to operate grain augers safely when loading and unloading silos and grain storage. It covers guard and drive checks, positioning and stabilising the auger clear of powerlines, safe start-up and feeding, monitoring grain flow, dust and ignition control, isolating the drive before clearing blockages and working safely around the outside of silos. It's written by WHS specialists, aligned to Australian WHS legislation, and fully editable in Microsoft Word.

This SOP is also included in the Ultimate Agriculture & Farming SOP Bundle. At $197 for the whole bundle, it works out much cheaper than buying SOPs one at a time.
Common questions
Does it cover entering a silo?
No. Entering a silo, grain bin or standing on a grain surface is confined space entry with a serious risk of engulfment. It must only be done under a confined space entry permit and isn't covered by this SOP.
Does it cover PTO-driven and engine-driven augers?
Yes. It covers augers driven by a PTO shaft, electric motor or engine, including isolating each type before clearing blockages.
How should blockages be cleared?
The auger drive is stopped and isolated first. Workers never use hands, feet or tools to push grain into a running intake, and never enter the silo to clear a blockage.
Can I change it?
Yes. It's a Microsoft Word file, so you can add, remove or change any step, check or hazard, and add your own logo and details.
Does it suit my state?
Yes. It's written to the model WHS laws and suits all states and territories, including Victoria under the OHS Act and Regulations.
What if it doesn't suit my work?
You're covered by our 30-day money-back guarantee if it isn't fit for purpose.
