Vehicle Loading Crane (Hiab) Pre-Start Checklist
A daily pre-start check for truck-mounted vehicle loading cranes, often called Hiabs, covering the crane, stabilisers, overload protection and emergency stops.
What's included
- Crane details, site and last service date
- A weekly operator log for Monday to Sunday
- Before starting checks: crane mounting, booms and pins, hydraulics, stabiliser legs and pads, hook and safety latch, winch and wire rope, controls and remote, load chart, logbook and lifting gear
- After starting checks: stabilisers, level indicator, emergency stops, overload protection, crane functions, slew brake and limits, and the stowed boom warning
- A faults and tag-out log so a faulty crane is taken out of use until it is repaired
- A one-page instruction sheet with step-by-step guidance and tips

- At the start of every shift, before the crane is used
- When a new operator takes over the crane
- After a fault has been repaired
